International Services

International Services has been a part of the Red Cross since
the very beginning. When the Red Cross was formed, its main purpose was to
assist in times of war. It was Clara Barton who started the Missing Persons
Bureau and Red Cross societies worldwide, assisting in tracing
family members lost due to war and disaster situations. The Summit County
Chapter's involvement began in World War II.
The American Red Cross works
with a global network of Red Cross, Red Crescent and equivalent societies to
restore hope and dignity to the world's vulnerable people. This international
Red Cross movement brings emergency relief to disaster victims, and improves
basic living conditions of those in chronically deprived areas of the world.
Guided by our seven Fundamental Principles — Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality,
Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality — the American Red Cross
partners with countless organizations in the efficient and effective relief of
human suffering and the empowerment of people with the skills they need to help
themselves.
International Services Volunteer Opportunities On an international level, refugees are victims of disaster and need
Red Cross assistance. We assist in refugee resettlement here in Summit and
Portage County. We help to provide clothes, basic living necessities and
orientation to their new community.
